Monogramming Basics

Monogramming can make nice things even "nicer." Choosing the right embroidery font is the secret ingredient to creating designs that feel just right.
One font can whisper, another can shout, and some just want to have fun. We'll talk about monogramming basics and considerations when choosing fonts for embroidery or printing.

Script vs. Block Font

One thing you would need to decide for fonts is to either choose a script style font or a block style font. The type of font can be based on the gender and age of the person that the item is for. If they are women or men, it could change what type of font would best suit them. For women, the most popular type of fonts that are most commonly used are script type fonts. For example, some types are Lavenderia, Script MT, Sweetheart and Charlotte. For men, the most popular type of fonts used are block fonts. For example, some types are Cambria, Athletic, Georgia, and Chelsea. However, something else to consider for choosing a font type is the occasion the item is for. Is it a formal event, such as a wedding, or something more casual, such as a baby blanket or bib?

Children’s Playful Fonts

Choosing a font for a child's item can be difficult sometimes. For some children, having a script font on their backpack or lunch box might be hard for them to read and block fonts could be seen as a little too basic. For example, a few font types that would work well would be Sweet & Sassy, Pancake, Orange Blossom, and Amazingly. Sometimes, the difficulty isn’t choosing script or block fonts, it’s deciding if you want to choose initials or a full name on an item.

Initials or Full Name

Deciding to either put initials or a full name on an item could be challenging for some people. However, a good way that could help that decision is based on how long a person’s name is, how big or small the item is, or just personal preference. For example, on shirts you could choose a full name or initials that are normally placed on the left chest of the shirt when it is worn. For smaller types of items like makeup bags or duffle bags, it might be easier to go with initials. The actual arrangement of initials within a monogram is probably the biggest question people have regarding monograms. A traditional female monogram is to have the initials read first name, last name, and middle name. For men, a common choice is having the initials read first name, middle name, and last name. Our most popular fonts for initials are Monogram KK, Juliette, HM Script, Circle Script, and Cambria.

Summary

Every embroidered or monogrammed item is unique, and the font you choose helps to make it personal. Whether it’s a child’s backpack or a monogram on a makeup bag, the right font ties everything together and turns it into something truly special.
